Future of Blogging??

So - I was chatting with my Dad this morning. I was really excited while telling him that I would be attending the Apologia Homeschooling Conference this weekend in Baltimore (there is still time to register!) and that I was hoping to get a sponsor to the Savvy Blogging Summit in July, not to mention the Relevant Conference in October. And how did he respond? I guess the same way any protective parent would.

He told me I "might want to reconsider investing too much in blogging" because he had heard on the news that blogging is going "out" thanks to microblogging with Twitter and Facebook.

Now let me say, financially I haven't invested much at all in blogging. The only thing I've paid for is a domain name and two conferences - and those conferences grew me as a person, not just a blogger, so they were well worth the investment.

But it got me to thinking. Is blogging a fad?

Is it on it's way out or is this just the beginning of new media? Will it fall by the wayside or continue to be a staple in news and advertisement like newspapers and television?

I think blogging will stand the test of time, it may change and evolve through the years as such things do...but I don't think it's going anywhere?

I'd love to hear what you think! What do you feel is the future of blogging?

  1. personally - I think blogging will evolve and become more popular as group blogs - where you can read from a list of writers on many topics and it's less to maintain for individual bloggers - but they still have an outlet to write. With things like tumblr growing popular - we might see blogs become more snippets and drive by readers. But the lone mommy blogger - I think those days are numbered.

  2. Well, I personally don't like facebook or twitter.

I guess if blogging goes out I'll have to go back to writing a diary!!!

  3. I'm with you-it already has evolved, blogs used to be online journals, now they are so many things, personal journals, networks to connect to others with similar interests, a source of news and facts, people blog professional for money-from a little extra money to real incomes, they are more interactive than a website, and FB and twitter have limits on your characters that don' allow for original content to be shared if you have much to say on it.
It will change but the news story I read said it was becoming unpopular with the *younger generation*. Us mommy bloggers, we got this though ;) LOL

  4. I agree with what Sonita and Stef said. It's here to stay! The internet as a whole is still evolving. But people use Google all.the.time to search things. Facebook and Twitter aren't going to provide google with all the results. :)

  5. First, are you sure you weren't talking to MY dad?!?!? That sounded exactly like something he would say! :-)

I think your assessment sounds pretty logical. And it's interesting, my "younger generation" daughters (23 and 22) love blogs. They both follow many...related to the subject matter that interests them. I agree it will evolve, but I don't think it will go away.

  6. Nothing stays the same- but people will always have voices.

  7. I agree with these ladies too. Blogging already HAS evolved. Wayyy back when, before blogging, I had a real website, which I attempted to use in a blog-like fashion. It was tough. A pain to code, to update it, to get it "out there". Blogging is easy, can be done for free, and it can go as far as you can imagine. Blogs are online journals, and as such, as long as there are those who journal, there will probably be those who blog. :)

  8. I agree with the comments above. I don't think it's going anywhere. It will naturally change over time based on demand, etc. but with as much information and support as blogs provide, I can't see really declining or becoming less popular.

  9. No! Blogging isn't on its way out. It's those sad circulation numbers for mainstream media that the naysayers ought to be watching. Their reporting on the death of alternative media sounds an awful lot like projection.

I will say that there are an awful lot of bad blogs out there, and *they* are on their way out. :-)

  10. I like reading other people's blogs and seeing what I can learn. I don't facebook or twitter, so I'm hoping that blogging sticks around.

  11. I love blogging, and don't much care if "they" say it's on the way out. I have no plans to go anywhere, and there's plenty of blogs for me to visit! Twitter is too short - what, 160 characters? And facebook doesn't really fill the same purpose as a blog. I think they speak to different audiences.

  12. I think blogging will evolve, and for many, it has already disappeared, thanks to Facebook. But I think for those of us who can't fit all of our words into the limitations of 300+ or 140(!!) characters, blogging, in some form, will be around for a long time, and I'm thankful for it. I've formed some great relationships that I would not have had were it not for blogging. I've even met a couple of people in person!

    Blessings, Cheryl!

  13. Maybe it's a generational thing?

  14. I don't think blogging is necessarily on it's way out, because there is nothing yet to replace it. I do believe that it is a transitional media format and something better will come along, soon.

It happens with everything.. not too long ago it was the forum craze.

  15. I do not think blogging is on its way out - evolve, sure. Twitter and FB don't have the personal touch that a blog does.

  16. I enjoy blogging as a way to explore ideas and thoughts with words. I like writing and trying new techniques and I am always trying to find my voice. I use it as a reference- regardless who reads it. I hope blogging isn't on the way out- I use Facebook all the time, but I link it to my blog. Facebook seems to dominate everything- even Netflix is feeling the threat.
    Long live Blogging! ; )

  17. Nah, I don't think blogging is on it's way out. I think Twitter and Facebook are just accessories to blogging. Twitter and Facebook can't do what blogging does, and blogging can't do what Twitter and Facebook do.
I believe blogging has a lot of life in it yet. :)

  18. Twitter is cool, but how could it EVER substitute for a blog? I mean 140 characters? Come on! Sure, you can say some pithy statement, but you can't expound on something and get really deep with it.

I don't "do" FB. I sometimes think it has the potential to become the anti-christ (LOL). But again, taking over blogging? I don't think so. It's a different medium.

  19. I prefer blogging to twitter any day. Though I do have a Twitter account. Blogging appeals to folks who truly enjoy writing, the character limit on twitter is too low...it just annoys!
FB is a great way to find new blogs! :-)

  21. I also think that blogging will adapt as years progress. I am not fond of facebook or twitter so blogging is my passion. I have learned so much over the past couple of years about chickens, homesteading, gardening, and homeschooling just from reading other's blogs. Hope in the future it only gets better.
    Blessings
