CM3 My #Blissdom Jam!

It's Monday and I'm ready for some music! How 'bout you? CM3, a.k.a. Crunchy Mama Music Monday, is a weekly meme where you can express yourself through music. If you'd like to play along be sure to read the guidelines and link up. Don't forget to include a link back here in your post so your readers can find us and play along too.

I've adopted Miley Cyrus' PARTY IN THE USA as my personal
Blissdom '10 song. I don't know why I like this song, it's a bit young and teen-popish compared to what I usually like. But the first time I heard it on the radio it grabbed me.

As for why it makes me think of Blissdom? Well, it mentions Nashville (holla!) this year's host-town. But mainly, I can identify with feeling out of place yet knowing it will all be okay. I'm feeling the fear and doing it anyway. This will be my first blogging conference and I feel like a little fish swimming into a great big pond.

I'm going to be learning from bloggers who have been doing this for years, who know how to effectively blend personal life and business blogging. I'll be meeting women I've adopted (whether they know it or not) as virtual mentors. I look up to these women...they're like celebrities to me. And to be honest I'm terrified of acting like this:

Yeah. I think I need to memorize the points in this How To Meet A Celebrity And Not Act Like A Tool list. I'll try not to frighten you ladies, really I will.

Thinking about Blissdom, and how much I could potentially learn, I get a little nervous, a little overwhelmed. But then I realize I won't be the only noob there, that this conference is about sharing and connections. And I know I'll be okay, it'll most likely be a lot of fun. And I'm looking forward to it! It's an adventure! What is blogging about if not forging relationships?

Mommy FAIL and FYI

Ugh. Yesterday I had two pretty bad mommy moments. I say Mommy FAIL because that's Fox's WoW lingo for something that goes wrong. In an attempt to clear my head and I thought I'd share here.

Mommy FAIL #1:

We went to my father's house last night for a welcome home party for brother who just got out of the military. He did a tour in Iraq, then another in Afghanistan, then spent the last few months stationed at Fort Hood Texas. He's finally out, for good and moving back to the area. Woo Hoo!

Anyway, a lot of family was there. The kids were all running around and acting wild. We have almost all boys so they were rambunctious and having a lot of fun. Fox was wrestling with his cousin, who is younger and smaller than him. There was a flip and suddenly the cousin was hurt. We thought his hand was broken so his parents rushed him to the hospital. Thankfully it turned out to be "just" a very bad sprain.

I was so mad. Thankfully, my boys have never broken any bones and here Fox is breaking someone else's. Everyone was gracious about it saying things like "boys will be boys" but I don't believe in that phrase; I was furious. I banished Fox, who already felt terrible, from my sight because I was afraid I would say something hateful I would regret.

So, rather than consoling my upset son, I came down on him too. Bad mommy. I eventually cooled off and had a calm talk with him about why it's important to be easy with those littler than you; but I still feel bad for not being calm and kind from the start. Ugh.

Mommy FAIL #2:

Bram played hard all evening too, we were all exhausted by the time we got home. We finally made our way to bed just after midnight (our usual bedtime around 9). At 2AM Bram (who sleeps with us) woke up crying and wanting to nurse. I nursed him for about a half hour, on and off he'd whimper "ow", grab his knee and cry for a moment. I figured he was just overstimulated and overdid it at my Father's house and would just fall asleep. I was wrong.

He kept crying on and off, so around 2:30 I gave him some children's Advil to help whatever was bothering him. I was exhausted so I was not happy about having to get up...I was short and grouchy with him when he didn't want to take the medicine. By 3AM he hadn't gotten any better, in fact he seemed more uncomfortable. He was now complaining of his knee, his ankle, his elbow and chin.

Very irritated now, because I couldn't tell if he was half-asleep-dreaming or really in pain, I growled (you know that frustrated mommy growl?) and snapped on the light. Guess what I saw? My baby covered in hives. Yep. There I was mad because I was exhausted and had less than two hours sleep while my baby was telling me something was wrong.

I don't know what he ate. I'm guessing something was cross contaminated with tree-nuts...but I really have no idea. I don't know if it was something he ate here or there but by 3:45ish, with a dose of Benedryl in him he was comfortable and fast asleep.

So no, yesterday was not a good mommy day.

FYI:

In other, less FAIL news, I am (again) changing the name of my music meme. It will now go by CM3. Do you love it? I love it! Mothering4Money suggested this title when I mentioned needing a change due to the fact that there were other Music Mondays out there. It's a hip abbreviation for the official name Crunchy Mama Music Monday. I'm excited to use it tomorrow :)

Tourtiere (French Meat Pie) Recipe

As promised on the Overnight French Toast recipe post, here is the recipe I used for the Tourtiere. Shane requested this for Thanksgiving Day breakfast. I was not thrilled with the idea of making it, a meat pie just didn't sound appetizing to me. But this was pretty good, much better than I expected. It's savory and very filling, a good protein-rich comfort food. Enjoy!

Tourtiere (French Meat Pie)

2 9 inch pie crusts
1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1 lb ground pork or veal
1 small onion, chopped
2 small stalks celery chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
3 small white potatoes, chopped into 1 inch chunks
1 1/2 cups beef broth or consomme
1 tsp savory
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp ground cloves

In a large saucepan over medium heat, place the beef, pork or veal, onion, celery, garlic, salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat until the meat is cooked through and well broken down (coarse-grained).

Add the potatoes and the broth or consomme. If there is not enough liquid to cover the meat and potato mixture, add water until just covered. Simmer, with the lid askew for 1 hour. Stir occasionally.

When done the meat should still be slightly wet. Remove from heat. Remove the potatoes and coarsely mash them with a fork. Stir the potato mash into the meat.

At this point you can cool the meat and refrigerate it until morning, or finish making the pies. If you refrigerate the meat, gently reheat it before placing it in the pie crust but don't let it dry out!

When you are ready to assemble the pies spoon the meat and potato mixture into a 9 inch pie shell fitted with a crust. Top with the second crust, seal and decorate the edges. Slit the crust a few times for a steam vent. Wrap the crust edges in foil to prevent burning.

Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 5-10 minutes or until golden brown. Allow the pie to rest for about 10 minutes then enjoy!

Overnight French Toast Recipe

Thanksgiving breakfast with the in-laws was a success. We had eggs and fresh fruit salad but the two main entrees were Overnight French Toast and Tourtiere. Both of these were pretty yummy. The Overnight French Toast is always good to throw together and refrigerate on Christmas Eve. Then you pop it in the oven on Christmas day. By the time you've finished opening presents breakfast is ready! So keep it in mind for this Christmas...or whenever :)

I will share the Tourtiere recipe tomorrow.

Overnight French Toast (Dairy and Casein Free)

1/2 cup vegan margarine such as Earth Balance
2 loaves (5"x12") bakery bread, sliced into 1'2-3/4 inch slices*
1 1/2 cups milk substitute of your choice, divided*
9 eggs, well beaten
1 - 1 1/2 cups brown sugar*
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla

Melt the margarine and pour it into the bottom of an 11x13 pan. Add the cinnamon, sugar, cinnamon and 3/4 cups of milk. Stir lightly. Add the bread slices in two layers. Combine the remaining 3/4 cup of milk and beaten eggs. Pour on top. Cover and place in refrigerator overnight. In the morning, bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes. You can serve it straight from the pan or flip it out onto a serving dish so the "syrup" layer is on top.

**My tips

*You can use butter in place of the vegan margarine and cow's milk or another milk substitute in place of the hemp milk. Those are just my favorite non-dairy alternatives.

*French and Italian work well in this recipe and so will regular loaf bread but my personal favorite is Portuguese Saloio

*I prefer to keep this a little less sweet and use only 1 cup of brown sugar then eat it with powdered sugar on top

The Lord is Really Testing My Patience

I've never been a patient person. Ever. I might take a while to make up my mind, but once I decide to do something I want to do it NOW, yesterday even.

So, sisters, I'm struggling.

I think the Lord is trying to teach me patience and I'm fighting. I'm fighting Him, myself, doubts, impetuosity....it's not fun.

I've alluded to the fact that I want to attempt a big project next year. I'm still not ready to share what that project is (in case I back out or fall on my face)...but I still hope to do it.

I just don't know if I have the ability. It's big, it's out of my comfort zone, it will most likely require connections I don't yet have. But I'm taking baby steps. Researching, researching, planning and more researching. I'm only about 3 months into the research process but at times my goal seems too lofty.

Baby Steps, I remind myself.

I start to feel better, like I may be able to accomplish my goals after all. Then (yesterday evening) I find out someone is planning something similar in the same general area around the same time. *sigh*

More doubt. I've been praying for God to close the doors and windows of opportunity if it's not meant to be...so is this a door slamming shut or a simple bump in the road? I wonder if I should allow it to bother me at all.

Or perhaps I should give myself more time, extend my timeline. Shane had suggested I extend my timeline after he had a dream of my project being successful in 2011. But that means I have to wait longer.

I've never been a patient person. Ever. I think the Lord is trying to teach me patience and sisters, I'm struggling.

Boys About Our Place

I read this poem on the back of my Keepers at Home magazine and thought it was really sweet. If you have boys I'm sure you can identify.

When you hear a fearful racket
Like a miniature cyclone
With some sounds so strange that surely
Their like was ever known
While a Mother listens calmly
Even with a smiling face
You may know it's nothing serious
There are boys about our place

When there's famine in the cupboard
And the ilk pail soon runs dry
And we can't keep bread or cookies
No matter how we try
When we vainly seek for apples
That have gone and left no trace
Hard times is not the trouble -
There are boys about the place

When there's sawdust on the carpet
And some shavings on the beds
When the rugs are tossed in corners
And some chairs stand on their heads
While, if a tool we're needing, we
All around the house must race,
We can know they're making something
These boys about the place

When the house if full of sunshine
On the darkest kind of day,
And we have to smile at seeing
Some creative, boyish play
And when eyes so bright and loving
Oft are raised to meet my face
My heart pleads softly "O, God bless him
Bless those boys about the place."

-Author Unknown_

I can't tell you how many times I've gone to make a cobbler only to find Fox has eaten half the fruit, or went digging for my ruler when Bram has carried it off to some secret corner of this house I have yet to discover. Or, how many times I've offered up a silent prayer for blessings upon my boys as I've watched them play.

If you are unfamiliar with Keepers at Home, it is a quarterly magazine written by women from a Mennonite, Amish, Plain and Quaker point of view . It is written "in the spirit of Titus 2" and strives to encourage homemakers. While I am a far cry from these hardworking women-who are up before the sun, training their children, farming, canning and ever mindful of their husband's authority-the graciousness of this magazine and it's encouragement gently remind me of the goals I set for myself. It helps keep me focused on the kind of wife, mother and Christian I want to be. I highly recommend it!

MY Music Monday #25

It's Monday and I'm ready for some music! How 'bout you? MY Music Monday is a weekly meme where you can express yourself through music. If you'd like to play along be sure to read the guidelines and link up. Don't forget to include a link back here in your post so your readers can find us and play along too.

As you may have noticed, the title of this meme has changed slightly. Last week I realized that there was at least one other Music Monday floating around cyberspace so I decided to rename my meme to MY Music Monday to cut down on confusion and avoid stepping on any toes. So welcome to MY Music Monday.

I know it's fall, practically winter, but all last week I had a great summer tune bee bopping around in my head. It put me in a great mood so I thought I'd share it here.

Paranormal Activity : A Movie Review

Basics

2009
Horror/Thriller
Starring Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat
Rated R for language

Premise (from the official site)

After a young, middle class couple moves into what seems like a typical suburban “starter” tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.

My Thoughts

Yawn. I was disappointed with Paranormal Activity. I did not find it scary at all. Neither did the 10 year old sitting behind me in the theater. To me, it was just the same thing over and over. Something moves, girl gets scared and pants like a rabid dog, tough guy challenges entity, entity gets mad and moves something else. Ho-Hum.

There were a few entertaining moments, like when Katie puts her foot down and Micah has to recite the argument agreement for the camera. But for me, there just wasn't much to this film. Maybe I expected more because of all the hype. Or maybe it didn't scare me because I'm from the Blair Witch generation.

Paranormal Activity was simply Blair Witch in a house instead of the woods of Burkittsville, MD. For me, being attacked by ghosts and being picked off one by one while lost in the deep dark woods was infinitely more scary than a guy and girl being picked on by a ghost while in their home.

The other thing that drove me crazy with this movie was the fact that they never sought out a priest. Even atheists run to the church when there is a demon out to get them. It goes without saying that if evil entities are real then good ones are too.

But you do have to give these guys credit. For such a low budget film they took the country by storm.

Weekly Wrap Up - Week Hell or High Water

I came into this week with a mission...to clean my house, come hell or high water. I could not take another week of tripping over toys on the floor, living out of laundry baskets or having to wash forks so we could eat dinner. It had gone on far too long!

I am happy to report that my sink is empty and shining, you can see my living room floor and we all have clothes in our drawers! Woo Hoo! I was able to do this because we took the week of school...I wasn't happy about that but it needed to be done in order to get through the holidays with a smile on my face. Plus, Fox really needed to visit his his great-grandparents, it had been a while. Here's how the week went.

Monday - I got up early, all gung ho to start my cleaning. Then I remembered that, since I am on the homeschool co-op committee, I had to help get together the paperwork for the spring semester mailing. It turned into an all day job. I was not pleased, but it's done and this is my last semester on committee so I won't have to worry about it any more :)

Tuesday - Co-op. After co-op I did a little cleaning, but nothing to brag about.

Wednesday - Fox got up early and left with Shane. Shane dropped Fox off at his grandmother's house on his way to work. I spent the first few hours of the morning cuddling with Bram, playing games and watching TV. Have I mentioned how much I adore the show Toot and Puddle? Love that show! Around 11 I decided I needed to get my sorry butt geared up and start cleaning...which I did!

Thursday - I was focused on Thursday, I got SO much accomplished. Laundry, dishes, floors, bathrooms, all looking fabulous. My house still isn't organized, but it's clean. Hallelujah! In the evening the lady who is taking my place on the co-op committee came by to pick up the co-op laptop. I went over the program with her and then danced a little jig when she walked out with the laptop. I enjoy being on the committee, but I have big plans for this blog and myself for next year and the committee takes up so much time. I'm looking forward to being free to build my bloggy empire! Mwah-ha-haaaa! Ahem.

Friday - Today was spent on the road. Bram and I went to Virginia to pick up Fox and had a great time visiting with Gram and PawPaw. Then we, with Fox, dropped by my mom's house in Maryland, which is kind of on our way home in Pennsylvania. We visited with her for about an hour then went home. And that's about it.

This weekend my plans include keeping my house clean and switching over the winter wardrobe...I still haven't done that yet. How was your week? Share your adventures at The Weekly Wrap-Up.

I'm Technologically Challenged So Let's Look At What I Won Instead Of Worrying About This Computer Nonsense

I'm seriously technologically challenged. Ugh. I signed up for feedburner and sitemeter. I've spent the last 20 mins trying to figure out why feedburner has a big fat ZERO listed in my stats even though I redirected my feed under settings. I thought it would take all my info from my google reader? I dunno and I don't have the heart to allow sitemeter to beat me down too; so lets do something fun.
Check out the postcards I won from one of Smockity's giveaways!

I won 200 of these babies and I adore them! They are from UPrinting, printed on sturdy RECYCLED PAPER (my favorite part) and just lovely. I could create my own design or choose one of their templates. Since I waited until the day before the deadline to place my order I chose a template. But I like it better than anything I could have designed.

I decided to order these to use in my Postcrossing adventures which by the way, is a great way to learn some geography or supplement a foreign country unit study. On the front I had them print "Greetings! (red) From The United States (white)". I didn't include phone or website info.

The back is crisp and clean with a cute inset of the front image, as you can see. Here I repeated my Greetings from The United States header and added a little blurb about my family and town. "Hello! We are the (last name) family. We live in (our town) Pennsylvania. (Our town) is a small, historic town established around 1750. We are also a homeschooling family. Postcrossing is a great way for us to learn about geography as well as different, fascinating cultures. We love to travel and enjoy new experiences. We hope you enjoy this postcard and we thank you for the opportunity to share a little information about our family!"

I also included a shameless plug at the bottom stating "If you would like to learn more about our family or homeschooling, feel free to visit our family blog at (this blog address)"

I love these postcards! I will be mailing out the first one next week. I'll keep you "posted" ;)

WFMW - Discount Rate Travel

My family and I love to travel! Whether it's to the next town over, the beach or Europe we try to always try to travel as inexpensively as possible. I put in a lot of hours scouring the internet for the best deals we can find. Here's a few of my favorite sites for discount travel.

Orbitz - So far I have ALWAYS found the cheapest airfare on orbitz. On average we save $150+ per ticket. It's my first stop when researching rates. They also generally have good combo deals on hotels and cars, but I usually book those independently.

Travelzoo - These guys have amazing deals on things like cruises and all-inclusive vacations to the Caribbean. Make sure you read the fine print though! Sometimes there are extra fees that jack up the price. Be sure to check out their Top 20 and Last Minute deals.

Google - You just can't beat google. Independent B&B's, self-catering apartments, small business car rentals have great deals just waiting to be found on their home page. Just type in your desired town and what you're looking for (hotel, B&B etc), skip to the 3rd or 4th page and start scouring the results.

We've saved thousands per trip. On both our trip to France and our trip to Germany I was able to find self-catering apartments for about $350 a WEEK., not to mention great deals on car rentals, train tickets and more. You just have to patient and willing to do the work. And also, be realistic about your budget. Don't expect to stay in a five star hotel for $75 a night :)

Pork (or Chicken) with Coconut Milk Sauce (GFCF)

I made this for dinner Monday night and I thought it was delicious. My husband liked it and my sons tolerated it. I wish I had thought to take a photo of it...but I didn't...I'm sorry.

Pork or Chicken with Coconut Milk Sauce (GFCF)

6 thinly sliced pork loin shops or chicken breasts
1 tablespoon coconut oil
3 large cloves garlic, chopped
2 tablespoons chopped crystallized ginger
1 can coconut milk
1/3 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (more or less to taste)
1/2 teaspoon white pepper (more or less to taste)

Over medium heat, melt the coconut oil. Pan fry the chops or breasts until they are cooked through and brown on each side. Remove the chops or breasts and set aside. To the pan add the garlic and ginger, saute for about 2 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer. Add the meat back to the pan, return to simmer and enjoy! I thought this was delicious, I love coconut oil. It would be very good served over rice.

Paying Mommy Bloggers - A Noob's Point of View

The blogging community has been sizzling with controversy over the payment (or not) of Mommy Bloggers. The arguments range from one extreme to the next; from those who accept payment or compensation being considered sell-outs to those who feel you should not lend even an unsolicited opinion without compensation. While the battle rages on, I thought I'd take a moment to dust off my gloves and step into the ring.

Admittedly, I am a noob. I have been blogging for just over a year and have only a handful of reviews to my name. I don't have any conglomerate connections. I've not yet been invited to any corporate headquarters, but I still feel I have something important to say. Why? Well, it could be an overinflated ego, but I prefer to think that my voice has value because I'm human. I'm a mom. I'm a consumer. And I'm honest. Honesty is paramount, the recent Twitter firestorms have taught us that.

I've read two great posts about this controversy from Kelby Carr and Ray Young (husband of Christine Young). Both bring up great points. The general theme being: we provide a valuable service, and that service is worth something.

As such, we cannot sell ourselves short for for the hope of getting our foot in the proverbial door. As I tell my children, everything we do has a consequence. It can be a negative consequence or a positive one. Or, more perplexing, it can be a positive consequence for us (getting a foot in the door) and a negative consequence for others (lowering the bar). We need to weigh the long term consequences of the whole. If we, in an effort to get to the top, are willing to review, consult, brand or lend our voice for free even once...why would a company ever want to pay? If they can get 10 lesser-known bloggers to tout their product for free, why would they want to pay the better-known blogger, who has spent a great deal of time and energy building her network, a fee to reach the same amount of people? Short answer: they won't. Ever. So while we may get to the top faster...will it be worth it? I don't think so. There will always be someone else willing to do it for free.

Now that doesn't mean we can all make it big right here and now. We can't all charge $2000.00 a month for an ad if we don't have the audience to deliver the desired results. But we all have to start somewhere. If you're like me and a low woman on the totem pole, that means starting small. Small is fine, small is good, small is better than free. It tells companies that while we realize we don't have a sweeping reach, we will one day, and our voice is still worth something now!

That something will be different for each of us. I wish I could share some magic formula to help us all calculate our worth...but I can't. It's frustrating I know. I recently read an article that said we should double or triple our hourly rate to establish a reasonable consulting fee. Well, I don't know about you, but I could multiply my rate by the power of 10 and it would still be zero. But there is hope. At the time of this writing, Kelby is running some polls to help establish some fee norms based on blog outreach and experience. I can hardly wait to see the results, because I'm honestly clueless about where to begin and this will be a much needed resource. I will link to her findings once they are up.

But remember that whatever the findings, these will be guidelines. Charge what you feel you are worth. Something Ray Young stated that really resonated with me was

"In my way of thinking, the mom’s are, if anything, more credible than the celebrities. Does Tiger really drive a Buick? Does Kelly Ripa really cook her own meals? Does Oprah really love Butt Paste?"

No, no, a thousand times no! I'm quite certain Tiger doesn't drive a Buick. I'd imagine Oprah has never tried Butt Paste. As for Kelly, I like to think she cooks at least some of her own meals (love you Kelly! *mwah*). But what this tells me is that our voice is more powerful than we think! Who told Oprah about Butt Paste? Her viewers! And who are her viewers? Mainly women! Mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts...women!

So I have to ask...do we need Oprah to tell us what what we already told her we like? Nope, I'd rather see more celebrity interviews. Do we need Tiger to tell us how great a Buick is? Nope, chances are we've already driven one.

We have a voice, and it's worth something. But we've allowed ourselves to be silenced. We've relegated ourselves to standing in the shadows. We're holding the teleprompter so celebrities can read what we've written, what we feel. It's time for us to realize our strength, our power as Mommy Bloggers and ask others not to demean us by offering us less than we're worth.

Let's Play I Spy

Now, I wasn't kidding when I said my house has been a terrible mess since we had about three solid weeks of sickness around here. The living room looked like the toy box vomited all over it, dirty dishes were stacked head high in the kitchen sink and we lived out of clothes baskets.

So to make y'all feel like supreme housekeepers, I decided we should play a little game...at my expense. So here we go. I Spy in my living room.

I Spy With My Little Eye:

20 Wooden Blocks
A Urinal
An Orange Flyswatter
An Empty Caulk Gun
A Pink Stuffed Dog Toy
A White Sock
The Movie "Cats and Dogs"
A Plastic Bag
A Dolphin
A Canning Ring
A Backpack/Lunchbox
A Bread Machine
The Bread Machine's Broken Lid
The Book "Brown Bear Brown Bear"
A Power Strip
3 Shoes
An Ostrich
A Zip Line Handle

The first one to find all the above items is the winner! And what does the winner receive? Bragging rights and the comfort in knowing that there really are houses messier than theirs. What? I'm obviously not organized enough to put together a prize pack! Thanks for playing :)
